Shopify Review 2026: Pricing, Features and Morocco Fit

Shopify

Shopify is a hosted e-commerce platform that lets a merchant build a storefront, manage inventory, and process orders without running their own servers. For Moroccan and diaspora entrepreneurs, it is worth a close look mainly for its speed to launch and its reach into international markets, though local card payments need a workaround since Shopify’s own payment processor is not available in Morocco.

Key features

  • Hosted, PCI-compliant storefront with SSL and a global CDN included on every plan.
  • Drag-and-drop Online Store editor, with free and paid themes for basic layout changes without code.
  • Built-in blog, product pages, and on-page SEO controls (title tags, meta descriptions, alt text).
  • Shopify App Store covering shipping, accounting, email marketing, and Arabic RTL layout tools.
  • Multi-channel selling: the same catalog lists on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and in-person POS hardware.
  • Abandoned cart recovery and discount codes, included from the entry paid plan onward.
  • Shopify Markets, for displaying prices and checkout in different currencies, useful for diaspora customers abroad.
  • Translate and Adapt, Shopify’s localization app, auto-translates storefronts into Arabic, though RTL polish still depends on the theme.

Pricing

Shopify runs five plans. Starter costs 5 US dollars a month for a checkout link only, not a full storefront. Basic runs 39 US dollars a month (29 billed annually) with a full store and no staff accounts. Grow, the plan Shopify used to call simply “Shopify,” costs 105 US dollars a month (79 billed annually) and adds five staff accounts and better reporting. Advanced costs 399 US dollars a month (299 billed annually) and adds custom reports and carrier-calculated shipping. Plus starts around 2,300 US dollars a month on a multi-year contract, with unlimited staff accounts and native B2B tools.

Card processing through Shopify Payments runs from 2.9 percent plus 30 cents on Basic down to about 2.5 percent plus 30 cents on Advanced, but this only applies where Shopify Payments operates, and it does not operate in Morocco. A Moroccan merchant using a separate gateway also pays Shopify’s own third-party surcharge, roughly 2 percent on Basic down to 0.2 percent on Plus, on top of the gateway’s own fees. New signups typically get a short free trial followed by a few months at a reduced rate before standard pricing starts, though the offer changes periodically.

Pros and cons

ProsCons
A working store can go live in days, no developer required.Shopify Payments is not available in Morocco, so merchants need a separate gateway plus Shopify’s added surcharge.
Large app catalog, including Arabic RTL themes and translation tools.Plan fee, paid apps, and gateway fees together cost more than the headline price suggests.
Shopify Markets simplifies selling to diaspora customers abroad in their own currency.Deep design or checkout changes require Liquid coding knowledge or a hired developer.
Reliable hosting and uptime, since Shopify manages the servers.Reviewers on Capterra report slower support response times during peak periods.
Consistent admin interface that beginners can learn quickly.Native B2B and wholesale features are limited below the Plus plan.

Who it’s best for

Shopify fits a Moroccan founder or diaspora entrepreneur selling to international buyers, whether that is a Moroccan design brand shipping to France, a diaspora-run store serving customers in Canada, or a local business that already accepts Moroccan cards and just needs a reliable storefront on top of it. It also suits anyone who would rather pay for a hosted platform than manage their own infrastructure, and who is comfortable using an app or a developer for the parts Shopify does not handle natively, like Arabic RTL polish.

It is a weaker fit for a merchant selling mainly to local, cash-on-delivery customers with no payment plan yet, since the absence of Shopify Payments means budgeting for both a Moroccan gateway (commonly built around CMI) and Shopify’s own surcharge on top of it. Anyone testing an idea on a tight budget, with low tolerance for extra setup steps, should map out the payment side first or consider a simpler option until that piece is solved.

How to get started

  1. Sign up for Shopify’s free trial and pick a starting plan (Basic is the usual entry point).
  2. Choose a theme, ideally one with RTL support for an Arabic storefront, and customize layout and branding.
  3. Add products, set shipping zones, and configure Moroccan tax settings as applicable.
  4. Set up a payment gateway that works in Morocco, since Shopify Payments will not appear as an option on a Moroccan account. This usually means a CMI-linked processor or another supported third-party gateway.
  5. Connect a custom domain and link social sales channels if relevant.
  6. Place a real test order through the full checkout, including the payment gateway, before opening to customers.

FAQ

Is Shopify free? No. There is no permanent free plan, only a trial period and a reduced introductory rate before standard monthly pricing starts.

Can Moroccan merchants use Shopify Payments? No. Moroccan merchants need a separate payment gateway, commonly one built around CMI or another provider that supports Moroccan cards, and Shopify adds its own third-party surcharge on top.

Does Shopify support French and Arabic? French storefronts work through standard theme settings, and Shopify’s Translate and Adapt app can auto-translate a store into Arabic. An RTL-compatible theme or app is usually needed for correct right-to-left layout.

Is Shopify a good fit for a first store with a small budget? It can work once the payment side is planned, but budget for the gateway and surcharge costs alongside the plan fee before assuming the advertised price is the full cost.
